Although the timetable called for work to begin in 2006, county commissioners said it was more likely nothing would be started till 2007. Finally, on June 8, 2009, a bid specification package was published, with a July 23 deadline for bids. Work on the dam is supposed to commence 10 days after the deadline and be completed in one year.

Conservation Notes

When I first started to report on the doings and concerns of the local sportsmen we were suffering from the loss of Portage Creek as a trout stream. The reason for the less was a strip mine at the headwaters of Scaffold Lick Run. The acid produced by the chemical reaction from the sulfur, water and air had killed every bit of aquatic life from that tributary through the whole lower length of the Portage. The Fish Commission tried to stock it as usual but the trout just turned belly up. That was the last time the state tried to stock it and the year was 1963.

Words Of Gold

I have a couple of renters, this summer. ‘Squatters’ might be a better word, I expect, since neither asked permission to move in and neither has offered to reimburse me at all for my unintended hospitality.

Rescuing Wildlife - Killing Fawns - Another Opinion

It was upsetting to read the article “Killing Fawns and Coddling Coyotes.” This year I have had the blessing of seeing a fawn born in the field below my home and cared for a few days before mom moved it to safer ground and recently 3 other fawns at play with their mom close by. To see wildlife is not to be taken for granted and always appreciated.
